Museum of Tanning

The centuries old brewing tradition is certainly the pride of Wiltz, but the small town also boasts a long tanning tradition.
A whole room is dedicated to this old craft.

Leather was already tanned in Wiltz in 1644.
During the economic boom that followed the Austrian occupation in the XIII century, the tanning activity developed into a real industry.
This new prosperity continued in the XIX century.
In 1887, the town of Wiltz counted 28 tanneries.
In the XX century, the leather industry flourished, thanks to mechanisation ant the shortening of the time of tanning.
Unfortunately, the modern procedures slowly killed the small enterprises, but furthered the success of two very important tanneries, the “IDEAL LEDER” and the “LAMBERT”
